NURBS surfaces
Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines - slightly younger technology, but still quite dated today.
Advantages: very useful for smoothly curving rectangular patches (or objects that can be unfolded into a rectangular shape), such as streamlined objects with rounded corners (cars, planes, submarines, iPods) or cylindrical objects like vases, cups, plates, pillars, rockets. NURBS surfaces appear smooth no matter how close the camera is.
Disadvantages: not so useful for organic objects, especially with 'branches' (octopus, human, hand, fork, tree), even if 'Patch-modeling' is used. (A method to 'glue' NURBS patches together, to enable T-junctions. It works but can often be very time consuming and un-intuitive.)
