Gimbal
The gimbal is a joint. This joint is also referred to as a spherical joint or a ball-in-socket joint. For example, your hip joint is a spherical joint.
This joint has three rotational degrees of freedom and no translational degrees of freedom. There are different ways to describe the rotations of the joint, such as Euler parameters, Euler angles, or Bryan angles. This joint suffers from the so-called gimbal lock (make link), that limits the rotations that can be used.
